I’m sitting here editing as the 11′o clock hour approaches and I can’t help but think about how lucky I am to be part of the Pandora’s Box Online Writing Group. A finer group of individuals, you won’t find anywhere. We were brought together via Writer’s Digest Workshops, with three of us starting the group August/September 2008 and another joining within the past few months.
What I like best about these folks is, while we all have a common is our love of the craft of genre fiction, we all have different perspectives of what makes a work of art. Some of us are more inclined to longer works, while others tend towards mixing it up with everything from the extra short short stuff (i.e., tweet fiction, hint fiction) through epic length novels and series. We have our grammarians, character specialists, big openers, and description gurus which make for a wide variety of critiques that are returned in record time.
Most of us have other feedback sources, but I’m sure I’ll be coming back to these folks for a long time to come, if for nothing else other than the encouragement (and pointing out the occasional misplaced comma.)
Regardless of our inclinations the feedback is superb and always constructive in nature (or at very least we’ve all grown a thick enough skin to endure each other’s honesty.)
Last year two of us embarked upon NaNoWriMo and won. This year all four of us are engaged and ready to set forth and conquer. I can hardly wait to see what the month has in store for us.
