Tanith Lee has been a favorite of mine since her unique take on a series of well known fairy tales in her collection “Red as Blood”, so when I saw she had a story in this year’s “Mammoth Book of New Horror” I immediately flipped right to it.
Like everything else that I’ve ever read from her, my first reaction is that she still has the old magic.
The easiest comparison of her story, “Under Fog”, would be “The Lottery”, although her portrayal of residents of the village is sympathetic throughout despite the gruesome acts that pervade the entire story.
Have any other of you read really good new short horror?
Check your pronouns, Jeff.
